Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp,
Or what's a heaven for?--Robert Browning
My May poet, Robert Browning was born on May 7, 1812, in Camberwell, London, and educated at its University College. He had a strong faith in G-d, but also believed that it was the responsibility of the individual person to achieve success in life. In the lines above from his poem "Andrea del Sarto" I believe he is saying "go for it"--reach for the stars! As you know he married Elizabeth Browning whose poetic reputation exceeded his own at that time. They are said to have had a very loving relationship--you might even say like "poetry in motion".
I hope you all enjoyed Erica Brown's discussion of "Symbolism in Jewish Art"--it certainly is true that a picture may be the equivalence of a thousand words. Our next meeting is on May 18; the program was not finalized at the time of this writing, but I can promise you a good breakfast and an interesting topic of discussion. At our March board meeting we discussed the topic of synagogue membership--i.e., how can we attract more new young families to join our synagogue. If you have any ideas please pass them along to me. Of course this is a concern for all members of our congregation.
We are planning an outing to the new Nationals baseball stadium; we hope many of you will be able to attend; bring your kids and grandkids-- "Take them out to the ball game!"
The Men's Club hopes that you had a great Passover--and will have a wonderful May. Don't forget to stop and smell the flowers!
